Patient

Excuse me.

Pharmacist

Hi.

Patient

Lately, my sleep has been very light. Is there any medicine you would recommend?

Pharmacist

I’m sorry you’re dealing with that. I can help. To make sure we choose the safest option for you, may I ask you a few questions? First, how long has this been going on?

Patient

It’s been about a week. I wake up many times during the night.

Pharmacist

Thanks. Are you having trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both?

Patient

Mostly staying asleep. I keep waking up.

Pharmacist

Has anything changed in your daily life lately, or have you been consuming more caffeine?

Patient

I’ve been pretty busy at work, so I often use my computer until just before going to bed.

Pharmacist

That makes sense. Bright screens and work stress right before bed can definitely affect sleep. A few safety questions: Do you take any regular medications or supplements? Any allergies?

Patient

No.

Pharmacist

Do you drink alcohol, smoke or vape especially in the evening?

Patient

No. By the way, do you have melatonin?

Pharmacist

I’m afraid melatonin is not available as an OTC medicine in Japan, but we DO have sleep aids.

Patient

Oh, I see. I didn’t know that.

Pharmacist

I recommend this one called “Suyanest.” It helps improve temporary sleep problems, such as difficulty falling asleep or waking up during the night. Please take two tablets before bedtime. However, if this medicine doesn’t help, it's best to consult a doctor.

Patient

Got it. I’ll try this OTC medicine first. Is there anything I should be careful about?

Pharmacist

It may cause next-day drowsiness, so avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in risky activities until you see how you respond. Also, steer clear of alcohol, and do not combine it with other medications that make you sleepy.

Patient

Got it. Thank you very much.

Useful Words & Phrases
